This bread is made with almost the same recipe as my bunny bread. Just add some food coloring and change the shape. It’s a yummy basic white bread dough that is just dressed up a bit! Let’s get started.

Pictures showing melted butter and green food coloring

First, add milk, butter, salt and sugar to a microwave safe bowl and heat until butter is melted. Let cool until lukewarm, around 110 degrees. Measure water and heat until about 110 degrees. Add a tablespoon of green food coloring to warm water. This is the food coloring I use here. Pour green water into mixing bowl and add yeast. This is my favorite yeast. Let sit until bubbly. Add milk mixture and stir using a dough hook.

Mixer mixing green dough

Add three cups of bread flour and mix until smooth. Continue to add flour one cup at a time until a nice dough forms that pulls away from the bowl. Turn off mixer and cover with a clean towel let rise until double in volume. About an hour. You should be able to push down on the dough softly and it will spring back when it has risen enough. Punch down and now comes the fun part of shaping it. A dough cutter is essential for this job. This is similar to the one I use. Place dough on a pastry mat and using the dough cutter, divide dough into two equal balls.

Three pictures showing the steps of shaping the shamrock bread

Shape dough into a ball, then using dough cutter cut into four squares without going all the way into the middle. Choose a square that is a bit bigger than the others and cut a “tail” with it making a stem for the shamrock. Make the leaves of the shamrock and little more rounded.Spread leaves out a bit and shape stem as desired. Repeat with other dough ball.

Let rise on parchment paper on cookie sheet until soft and pillowy; about an hour. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-45 min. Let cool completely and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 2 tsp. Salt
  • 3 Tbsp. Sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. Butter
  • 1 1/2 cup Water
  • 1 Tbsp Yeast
  • 6 1/2-7 cups Bread Flour

Directions

  1. Either on the stovetop or in the microwave, warm milk, salt, sugar and butter until butter melts. Small bubbles will form if using the stovetop. Let cool until lukewarm, around 110 degrees.
  2. Warm water in microwave until around 110 degrees. Pour into mixer and add 1 Tbsp. of green food coloring. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit until bubbly.
  3. Add milk mixture to water mixture in the mixer. Pour in three cups of flour and mix until smooth using a dough hook. Choose a square that is a bit bigger than the others and cut a “tail” with it making a stem for the shamrock. Make the leaves of the shamrock and little more rounded. Repeat with other dough ball.
  7. Place on parchment paper on a cookie sheet and cover with a towel. Let rise until double.
  8. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake for 30-45 min until golden brown.
