DIY Rabbit Hay Feeder

This DIY rabbit hay feeder can be made easily at home with just some leftover fencing and a few tools. Then it can be stapled or screwed to the hutch wall and it keeps the hay clean.

I had wanted to make my own rabbit hay feeder for quite awhile so that the hay stayed off the ground and clean. And I finally took the time to figure it out. I made two sizes. I made a smaller ones for each of the boys and a bigger one for the girls because I can keep them together.

A piece of fencing with 2 in by 4 in holes

It was a little tricky to find just the right size of holes. It needed to be big enough to let the bunnies eat out of it but small enough to hold the hay in. I had some wire fencing left over from another project with 2 in by 4 in holes. I cut a piece that was 4×3 for the bigger feeder leaving the extra wires for twisting around itself.

Wire fencing with the sides pulled in

Start by folding in the sides. Use pliers if you need help making the bends.

Clipping the corner wire

Using wire clippers, cut the bottom wire that is to the right of the wire that has become the corner. Then clip the other side too.

Fold the piece over to make the bottom

Fold the front piece to the back making the bottom of the basket. The cross wire will come about halfway to the sides.

Use pliers to bend side pieces

Using pliers, bend the middle of the sides so it is even with the bottom piece you folded over. The back isn’t enclosed all the way but this is ok because it will go against the wall of the rabbit hutch.

It looks a little crazy at this point, but I promise it will work.

using wire cutters, cut off the wires that are sticking out

Using wire cutters, cut off the wires that are sticking out. Leave the long wires to wrap around and secure the hay feeder.

Wrap the wires around the front of the feeder. I was careful to point the ends to the back and down so that they wouldn’t scratch the bunnies. Clip off any extra wire you might have.

To secure everything, wrap the last wire around the corners.

I used staples to hang mine, but it was tricky to get the staple gun in the hutch. Screws would have worked well too to just hang it on.

Izzie the cat jumped in when I had to door open to see what Henry was. It was so funny! If you have chickens, you might enjoy my post about a DIY flock block. You can find that here. Happy farming!
