DIY Hanging Kitchen Bar Hand Towel

This DIY kitchen bar towel is great for the dishwasher or oven because it won’t fall off when you open the appliance. And it looks super cute!

I like to put a towel on my dishwasher handle because it’s right next to the sink. Super handy for hand washing. But every time we open the dishwasher, the towel falls off. So frustrating! Does this happen to you? So I wanted to create a towel that I can tie on the dishwasher bar that still looked nice but was functional. I really liked how this turned out. Let me show you how I did it.

Yellow hand towel and polka dot fabric

First I picked up a towel that matched my decor. It’s a long one, 30 inches in length. Then I went into my stash of fabric and picked one that would coordinate with the towel. I cut three inches across the width of the fabric. I found that made the perfect width for tying the towel after I sewed it.

Pin it with right sides together. Then sew down the edge with a 1/4 seam. Now comes the tricky part!

Turning the polka dot fabric tube right side out

Now you need to turn it right side out. I did as much as I could with my fingers to get it started. I found that a chopstick was perfect for pushing on the inside to get it to turn. I’ve also used the flat side of a knitting needle to do this on a different project. It takes a bit of time, but it’s not too bad.

Ironing the polka dot fabric

Smooth it down so the seam is on the bottom. Using the iron, carefully iron so the seam stays on the bottom and smooth it all out.

Next I draped the towel over the bar. I found the middle of the fabric ribbon I had made and tied it on the towel to figure out where it looked best. I also trimmed it to the length I wanted leaving it just a bit longer for a seam allowance.

Sewing the polka dot fabric to the back of the hand towel

I put a pin in the back of the ribbon into the towel while it was still tied on. I then untied it and smoothed it out. I folded the towel in half to make sure everything was even.

I then sewed a small square on the back to hold the ribbon in place.

Ironing the edge of the fabric strip

Iron the ends a 1/4 in at an angle to make nice nice finished edges.

Finishing the edge of the strip

Tuck the ends in at the crease and pin in place. Sew along the edge and you’re finished!
