DIY Chicken Scratch

This DIY chicken scratch is easy to mix up and can be customized to the season. It fills a 27 gallon feed bucket and lasts for a long time. That is saving money and time! *This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission, at no cost to you, if you make a purchase through a link.*

We all know chickens can get bored and that leads to other problems like picking on each other and eating eggs. Also they have a natural instinct to scratch and forage. Chicken scratch is great for helping with these things and can provide some nutrients as well.

I wanted to make my own chicken scratch for a couple reasons. The first one being money! With as many chickens as I have, it gets expensive. I also wanted to control what went into it during certain times of the year. I didn’t want any corn in it in the summer months and be mostly corn during the winter. When chickens eat corn, it raises their metabolism and warms them up. Great when its cold; not so great in the middle of summer.

Bags of oats, seeds, peas, meal worms and other things needed to make chicken scratch

I bought my supplies from the local feed and tack store but if you don’t have one close I’ve provided links for Amazon. I am an Amazon affliate which means I may receive a small commission, at no cost to you, if you make a purchase through a link. Thank you, that helps me be able to continue to do what I do ;). I’ve researched what would be the best things in this DIY chicken scratch.

Here’s what I added to mine:

~Oats [You can find that here]

~Wheat

~Milo

~Cracked Corn (It was fall and getting cold) [You can find that here]

Colorful seeds and things in a bicket for chicken scratch

It all looked so pretty in my bucket! I used a 27 gallon feed and seed bucket from my local feed store. Works great to keep mice out. Then I just mixed it all up with my hands and added more of one thing or another until it looked even.
